FREEING THE SHADOW SELF: a practitioner masterclass

Join us in November…

This masterclass is for students past and present of our Medicine Wheel & Healing Tools shamanic practitioner training. The next class in the UK takes place from Friday 6 – Monday 9 November 2026 at the Ammerdown Retreat Centre, near Bath.

We consider this essential training if you’re considering working with clients – and, even if not, as we do more and more of our own personal work, we eventually find ourselves in need of a deep dive into the shadows.

Shadow work, sacred work…

The Shadow is the hidden side of our psyches, with both its positive and negative aspects.

It’s the parts of us that have been banished, mostly lives in the dark, and doesn’t come out much, except when we least expect it, and mostly when we are least able to control it!! Then we can feel as if something else has taken over our lives, someone else has taken over the steering wheel and is now driving our bus… and we can’t be sure where it will end up!!

Testimonial…

“The Shadow workshop offered by Chris Waters from Spirit of the Inca is probably the most powerful courses I have ever done. I enjoyed experiential work as part of my counselling training but this workshop offered a new level of depth and embodied learning for me. The teachings come from a place of deep understanding, experience and knowledge and are offered with a lot of care and love. Chris and her team live and breathe this work and walk alongside you, holding a safe space and creating a sacred process to explore your shadow. For me it was a beautiful, moving experience that has helped me to discover and welcome back parts of myself. And I know I will be back, to walk into the cave again… to remember my essence. I would highly recommend this workshop.” Judith Bladel

Honoured and set free…

Our Shadow Self can wreak havoc with our health, our relationships, with our careers and keep us stuck in old patterns of behaviour that seem inappropriate and yet hard to change.

Scared and pushed out of sight, where we imagine that no one can see it, our shadow is waiting to be honoured, set free, brought into the light where it can truly serve us, rather than keep us small, hidden and protected or defended from our true identity.

The cave we fear to enter…

It takes a lot of energy to keep our Shadow Self hidden, that’s how we end up with chronic fatigue/auto immune diseases and other debilitating illnesses.

If we don’t hide it within and harm ourselves, we will most certainly give it to someone else to hold for us… just so we can see it… and mostly we find that those are the people who push our buttons and drive us crazy! Either way, this is what creates conflict in our lives, and is a BIG distraction from what we are here to do.

Finding our gold…

An experiential, lively and powerful weekend. We dive together into our shadows help them to find a place in our lives, and return with nuggets of gold: our gold.

We bring home our light and release our uniqueness, our creativity, our imagination, and our courage onto the waiting world.

We hope we’ll see you in November.

A word from Chris Waters…

“I would rather be whole than perfect.”
That, for me, really gets to the heart of shadow work.
And this is why I see this as a masterclass, and a definite must if you work with people… and compulsory if you want to be a recommended practitioner of this school.
It’s also probably my favourite class out of all the classes I teach, because we don’t just learn about other people. We discover more about ourselves too.
And honestly, it’s fun.
It’s also serious.
There are moments of laughter, recognition and surprise, but there are also moments where we come face-to-face with parts of ourselves we may have been avoiding for a very long time.
Because we spend so much of our lives trying to be the person we think we should be.
Good. Kind. Loving. Strong. Successful. Easy-going. Whatever our version of “good” looks like.
And then there are all these other parts of us.
The angry part.
The jealous part.
The selfish part.
The needy part.
The part that wants attention.
The part that wants to say, I’ve had enough.
The part that doesn’t want to be nice anymore.
And somewhere along the way, we’ve decided those parts aren’t acceptable.
So we push them down.
We hide them.
Sometimes so well that we genuinely don’t believe they’re part of us anymore.
That’s the shadow.
Carl Jung described the shadow as the parts of ourselves that we’ve pushed outside of our conscious identity because they don’t fit with the person we believe ourselves to be.
And what I find really interesting is that the shadow isn’t only the dark stuff.
We hide beautiful parts of ourselves too.
Our confidence. Our power. Our creativity. Our sexuality. Our ambition. Our sensitivity. Our ability to take up space.
Maybe you were told you were too loud.
Too emotional.
Too much.
Too sensitive.
Too bossy.
So you learned to become less of that.
But those parts didn’t disappear.
They went into the shadow too.
And then life has this wonderful way of bringing people along who show us exactly what we’ve buried.
Usually by irritating us more than we’d like to admit.
That’s where projection comes in.
There can be something really interesting in the people we have a huge reaction to. The people we judge. The people we can’t stand. And sometimes even the people we’re completely fascinated by.
Because occasionally, what we’re reacting to in them is something we haven’t been able to recognise or accept in ourselves.
Now, that doesn’t mean every person who frustrates you is your shadow.
Sometimes someone is simply behaving badly.
But when there’s a real emotional charge there … when something gets right under your skin… I think it’s worth getting curious, rather than furious!
What is it about this person that affects me so much?
What are they allowing themselves to be that I don’t allow myself to be?
And where might some version of this exist in me?
That’s where shadow work begins.
Not by judging it.
Not by trying to get rid of it.
And definitely not by pretending we’re somehow above it.
But by being willing to look at it.
Because integration doesn’t mean acting out every part of our shadow.
Owning your anger doesn’t mean becoming aggressive.
Owning your selfishness doesn’t mean suddenly not caring about anyone else.
It means being able to say:
Yes. That exists in me too.
And strangely, the more we can do that, the less those parts have to run the show from underneath everything.
For me, that’s what becoming whole is about.
It’s not becoming this perfectly healed, perfectly evolved version of ourselves where nothing messy ever comes up again.
It’s being able to hold all of ourselves.
The light and the dark.
The beautiful bits and the uncomfortable bits.
The person we’re proud to be and the parts we’d rather nobody knew about.
And maybe the question underneath all of this is simply:
What part of myself am I still trying not to be?
Because perhaps the work isn’t about becoming someone better.
Perhaps it’s about becoming more fully who we already are.
And that’s why I love teaching this masterclass so much.
It’s a chance to learn, reflect, laugh, get uncomfortable, become curious and discover more of ourselves.
It’s fun, but it’s also serious.
And if you work with people, I genuinely believe this is a must. The more willing we are to understand and work with our own shadow, the more present, authentic and compassionate we can be with the people we support.
Join me for the Shadow Work Masterclass, 6–9 November.
If you work with people, or you simply want to understand yourself on a much deeper level, this is one I really wouldn’t miss.
Come curious. Come open. Come ready to laugh, learn and perhaps meet a few parts of yourself you didn’t realise were still there.
Carl jung saya ‘shadow work is holy work’. I totally agree….
6–9 November — come and do the work with me.

Acceptance…

We want to get to know all these orphaned parts of ourselves so that we can hold our power lightly in the world.

The way to world peace is through acceptance of our differences – if we can accept the parts of us that we have come to fear, mistrust or hate, then we can find peace in our hearts and we will be a true and lasting force for change in the world. It’s an opportunity to thaw the ice, and to reach out beyond our limitations and embrace fully the potential that lives within each of us.

“I feel honoured to have been part of Chris’s Shadow Masterclass 2025 and benefit from nearly 30 years of Chris’s experience, wisdom, skills and developed teachings. This is such a powerful and unique masterclass, and gave me everything I didn’t know that I needed.

“I felt so held, supported and nurtured by Chris, her team and the group. This enabled me to really go there and face my deepest darkest fears and blockages within a safe space. During the sacred processes I could then make friends with, heal and honour these shadow aspects of myself and reclaim back my power. Everything’s changed.

“My whole life I’ve wasted so much energy keeping these deep rooted fears and ugliness buried so deep down, it’s been exhausting.

“Months on from attending the Shadow masterclass, I still feel a deep stillness and peace inside me that I have never ever felt before. So light and free. It’s so true, “The darkest cave we fear to enter holds our brightest gold”. We all took this journey together. This was an extraordinary, healing and totally life-changing experience.

“There were many different aspects, teachings incorporated within this Shadow masterclass. I now have more tools that I can use in my everyday life.

“I also have a deeper understanding of the different personas that were put onto me growing up and those I took on myself were ruling me, blocking who I truly am, blocking becoming the best version of myself. During this masterclass I was able to unravel these, give them what they needed and heal them. I learnt so much. Also a deeper understanding of drama triangles.  I realised in my life I had been creating my own drama triangles going round and round myself from victim to rescuer to perpetrator. I am now owning this and old patterns are shifting.

“This masterclass training has enabled me to clear so much. My life and creativity is flowing with more ease than ever before. I feel a deep trust. I am shining brighter than ever before. It feels the biggest blockages from my fulfilling my dreams are clearing. I am actively moving forwards now and bit by bit actually bringing my dreams in to reality.

“For me, the Shadow Masterclass is not a one off. Every time I attend this masterclass, I go deeper and deeper. I heal deeper wounds and find more gold that I never knew existed within me.  If you get the opportunity, I would wholeheartedly recommend this rare, unique Shadow Masterclass with Chris!” Marnie
